Experience the Magic of Winter: Celebrate the Holidays at Connecticut’s Historic Parks
Uncover the Charm of Gillette Castle and Osborne Homestead Museum
(HARTFORD) – As the frost settles on the rugged landscapes of Connecticut, the Department of Energy & Environmental Protection (DEEP) invites residents and visitors alike to embrace the spirit of the season at two iconic locations: the Osborne Homestead Museum in Derby and Gillette Castle in East Haddam. These historic sites, transformed for the winter holidays, offer a unique opportunity to immerse in local culture while reveling in festive cheer.
“The winter holiday season is an exceptional time to explore the indoor treasures that our state parks have to offer,” remarked DEEP Commissioner Katie Dykes. “We extend a warm invitation to families and friends to visit these exquisite historic sites. Our holiday events are not only enriching but also budget-friendly—Osborne Homestead Museum tours are complimentary, while admission to Gillette Castle is only $6 for adults and $2 for children.”
Explore the Osborne Homestead Museum
Sit nestled within the picturesque Osbornedale State Park, the Osborne Homestead Museum welcomes visitors to a journey through the winter season intertwined with local history. Each year, the sumptuous decor of this historic home, formerly belonging to Frances Osborne Kellogg, is graciously provided by local garden clubs and community organizations.
This year’s holiday theme, “Holiday in Derby,” coincides with Derby’s 350th anniversary, celebrating the significant contributions of the Osborne family to the city and highlighting small-town ingenuity. DEEP encourages all to bask in the beauty and warmth of the holiday decorations.

Why It Matters
These events not only enliven the community spirit but also significantly contribute to local economies and preservation efforts. By attracting visitors, the parks bolster support for conservation initiatives and educate the broader public about Connecticut’s rich history. Engaging the next generation in these discussions is vital for the stewardship of our natural and cultural heritage.
Field Insights: What to Watch For
- Pro Tips: Arrive early to secure a parking spot, especially on weekends. Dress in layers; indoor spaces can be cozy, but the winter chill can bite outside.
- Nature Walks: When visiting, take advantage of the open trails at both sites to explore the winter landscape, which may reveal local wildlife. Be sure to adhere to park guidelines to preserve the environment.
- Community Involvement: Engage with local volunteers during your visit. Their insights can deepen your understanding of the parks and foster a sense of community connection.
Since its establishment in 1913, the Connecticut State Park System has maintained a mission to enrich public recreational and educational opportunities, giving visitors access to the state’s historic, cultural, and natural resources through extensive park and forest recreation areas.
