Meet Arizona’s Majestic Bald Eagles: Join Us for an Educational Seminar
Experience the Thrill of Encountering America’s National Symbol
Imagine the thrill of witnessing a bald eagle—one of the nation’s most iconic symbols of freedom—soar gracefully above Arizona’s breathtaking landscapes. As we celebrate this majestic bird, the Arizona Game and Fish Department (AZGFD) and Liberty Wildlife Rehabilitation are joining forces to host an enlightening seminar on Saturday, January 31, at 9 a.m. at the AZGFD Regional Headquarters in Pinetop.
Uncover the Mysteries of the Bald Eagle
This annual event is more than just a seminar; it’s a deep dive into the fascinating life of the bald eagle. Attendees will be treated to a comprehensive indoor presentation that covers:
- Life History: Learn about the unique lifecycle of bald eagles.
- Identification Techniques: Discover how to identify eagles in their natural habitat.
- Behavioral Patterns: Gain insight into their hunting, nesting, and migratory behaviors.
- Current Status: Understand the population dynamics and conservation status of bald eagles both in Arizona and across North America.
Attendees will also have the opportunity to view an award-winning film about Liberty Wildlife’s feather repository program, gaining awareness of the crucial work that supports wildlife rehabilitation.
To cap off this educational experience, attendees will be invited to meet “Sonora,” a live bald eagle, and even capture a photo with this magnificent bird.
Field Insights: Witness Eagles in Their Element
Following the indoor program, an optional field trip to a local lake will offer participants the chance to observe bald eagle behavior firsthand— provided that weather conditions and the eagles permit.
Pro Tips for Observing Bald Eagles:
- Dress for the Outdoors: Layer your clothing for changing weather conditions.
- Bring Optics: A good pair of binoculars or a spotting scope will enhance your viewing experience. If you lack equipment, don’t worry—knowledgeable birders and biologists will be on hand to guide you.
- Learn the Behavior: Look for eagles perched near water bodies or soaring on thermal currents, typically spotted in Arizona from December through March.
Why It Matters
Protecting Our Natural Treasures
Understanding bald eagles is essential not only for birdwatchers but also for hunters, hikers, and conservationists. As these birds adapt to our changing ecosystems, local economies, reliant on wildlife tourism and outdoor recreation, can benefit from increased awareness and appreciation of our natural resources. The rise in breeding pairs choosing to remain in the White Mountains throughout the summer also lends insight into habitat stability and availability—critical factors for managing local ecosystems effectively.
According to AZGFD Nongame Specialist Dan Groebner, “Most of Arizona’s bald eagles are snowbirds, generally migrating south from northern habitats in December. We frequently observe them at White Mountain lakes and reservoirs during January and February, but promisingly, a growing number of pairs are now settling in to breed and raise eaglets in the region.”
